AWC Gala- Broadway

This weekend was the American Women's Club Gala dinner- with Broadway as the theme. About two hundred people gathered to dine, dance, and raise money for a needy foundation which supports orphaned children in Thailand. It was a great evening.
I sang the National Anthem and served as the emcee for the evening. Each of the tables were named for a Broadway show. Ours was Gypsy- and our table certainly won the prize for having the most fun!
The Ambassador and his wife were there, which was a wonderful treat. Mrs John is the Honorary President of the AWC, and they both gave speeches to kick off the event. Markings, an organization that has the rights to distribute archival quality prints from the US Library of Congress, had an exhibition entitled "Best In Show" with framed prints all centered around the themes of Broadway and New York. Some of them are quite spectacular.
I hosted the live auction, where we raised several thousand dollars for the foundation. This is the second time I've hosted an auction, and it was so much fun! There was a silent auction as well, with great prizes, including costume jewelry from a designer who's work is all the rage in Hollywood (and has been seen in the "Sex and the City" movie and on "Lipstick Jungle").
The Marines were on hand for the presentation of the colors, which is always wonderful. We had a lot of fun with them in front of the camera, as you can tell. :) My friend Cris is a hairstylist. She did my hair for the evening, and was then there that night to fix it when it started falling down!
All in all, it was a fantastic evening. And, yes, this is the first of 3 or 4 black tie events that I'll be attending this year. Such is the life of an American in Thailand...
